Flora 1943 painting
2009 limited edition prints available
Jim Flora Art LLC has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of an uncirculated 1943 Jim Flora tempera entitled Charlie's Egg. This work has not previously been reproduced or published anywhere.
The work, which was hand-titled and dated by the artist in the lower right in pencil, dates from the year Flora assumed the position of Art Director at Columbia Records. We don't know who Charlie was or why his egg sparked the artistic interest of Flora. Curiously, this masterpiece was painted on the back of a large Columbia Records foldover convention brochure. During World War II, government rationing caused paper shortages, and a number of works by Flora from this period were rendered on blank sides of printed material.
A similar, probably earlier undated work, composed with different colors and fills and titled Self-Portrait (shown at left), was reproduced in The Curiously Sinister Art of Jim Flora. (This Self-Portrait is different from a similarly titled later work available as a fine art print.)
Only twenty-five (25) prints of Charlie's Egg were produced for this edition. Each print is titled in the lower left hand corner beneath the image and numbered in the lower right. It is authenticated on the reverse with the stamped seal of Jim Flora Art LLC (a Flora family enterprise). We are now offering numbers 21/25 thru 25/25 for $200 each. Prices will increase for subsequent prints as the edition depletes.
Produced by Flora printmaker Barbara Economon, the prints have been meticulously crafted and painstakingly replicated from the original work using state-of-the-art digital technology. A high-resolution scan was made of the original art, a tempera painting on heavy stock. All aspects of the original artwork have been retained, including minor aging artifacts which in no way detract from the overall impression. In addition, because the original work was unsigned, a compatible Flora painted signature from 1943 has been added below the active art to officially "brand" the work.
The image area is 19-1/2" high x 15-1/4" wide — slightly larger than the original 16" x 13" work — and centered on a sheet 22" high x 17" wide. The unframed prints are on heavyweight (310g) mould-made William Turner stock, a natural white, 100% rag paper with a fine toothy surface manufactured by Hahnemühle, who are renowned for premium-grade archival papers. The edition was produced on an Epson 3800Pro large format printer using Epson UltraChrome K3 Pigment Ink Technology, resulting in brilliant, velvety color and offering excellent longevity and durability.
The print will ship flat, securely packaged and guaranteed against bending or dents. Print includes a detailed, custom-printed one-sheet with instructions for the proper care of this fine art reproduction.
Due to the fine art print's higher-resolution process, as well as superior paper, inks, and quality control, the colors in the print appear brighter, crisper, and more vibrant than the online image. Online color appearance may vary slightly depending on your monitor settings.
